The Decameron Project

Overview

Sophy was commissioned to illustrate the cover and spot illustrations for The Decameron Project, a special literary issue by The New York Times Magazine. The project invited 29 authors, including David Mitchell and Margaret Atwood, to contribute new short stories inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron, a 14th-century collection of tales told by a group of people seeking refuge from the plague. Echoing that historic act of storytelling in times of crisis, the issue aimed to capture the emotional and social landscape shaped by a contemporary pandemic.
